Painting Away Color Tutorial

Step 1: Open the image you would like to work on.

Step 2: Click on the brush tool. In the options bar, switch the Blend mode to Color. Change your foreground color to black.

Step 3: From the brushes palette, choose a medium sized, soft -edge(0% Hardness) brush.

Step 4: Start painting. As you paint, the color will disappear leaving your image in grayscale.

Shadow In Motion

Step 1: Tap the letter "D" to change your foreground color to black. Hold down the options key and tap the delete key. Type your text using a medium gray color (666666).

Step 2: Duplicate your type layere by using the Apple + J shortcut. Rasterize your layer.

Step 3: Go under the filter menu, under pixelate, choose fragement. Run this filter twice by using Apple + F.

Step 4: Press Apple + T. In the options bar change the width and height to 130%.

Step 5: Go back to the original layer and rasterize the your layer. Go to the top layer and press Apple + E to merge the 2 together.

Step 6: Bring up the Hue/Saturation Apple + U. Click on Colorize and move the Hue slider to the color of your choice.

Gold Chrome Tutorial

Step1:Type your text. Put a selection around your text.

Step2:Go under the Select menu and choose Save Selection. Click OK. Deselect your text. Delete your type layer.

Step3:Go to the channels palette, click on Alpha 1. Go under the Filter menu, under blur, choose Gaussian Blur. Enter 1 pixel.

Step4:Return to the layers pakette and click once on the background layer. Go under the Filter menu, under Render and choose Lighting Effects. Under the texture menu choose Alpha 1. click OK.

Step 5:Go under the image menu, under Adjustments Curves. Create a curve.(Input 186. Output 64.) Click OK.

Step 6:Go under the Select menu and choose Load Selection. Choose Alpha 1 from the Channel pop up menu. Click OK. Go under the select menu, under Modify and choose Expand. Enter 3 pixels. Click OK.

Step 7:Press shift + Apple + J. Click OK. Press Apple + A, then press delete. Deselect. Click on your text layer, choose drop shandow from the layer styles. Click OK.

Step 8:Choose color overlay from the layer styles. Change the Blend mode to overlay then click the color swatch and use the following: R=208, G=165, B=16. Click OK.

Holiday Card Project (In memory of Delton Brown)

What is the Holiday Card Project?
The purpose the Holiday Card Project is to create holiday cards for people who are hospitalized during the holiday season. The idea behind the project is to simply try to bring a little cheer to those who are undergoing hospital stay.

Exactly who receives the cards?
The cards will be distributed to both US and international hospitals. The cards will be delivered in person by a representative. The patient who receives the cards age range from children to seniors and have illness or injuries that vary from mild to terminal.

What should I write in the card?
Be as creative as you'd like. Just remember, the degree of illness for patients will vary, so it's important to be cheerful. Some suggested greetings include, "Hope you're feeling getter", "Thinking of you ", or "Have a nice day! Try to stay away from "Get well soon" as it might not be appropriate for all patients. Remember include a message of "Happy Holidays!

Will the patients know who sent the cards?
The only way a patient will know who sent the card is if you sign your name. If you would like to send your card anonymously, you may.

Can I send more than one card?
Absolutely! However, remember that quality is better than quantity. Sending one quality card that you put time an effort into is better than sending two cards that were thrown together.

Is there a specific size or medium for the card?
There is no specific size for he cards. Use your best judgement. You can design and decorate cards by drawing, coloring or painting. You can use glitter, construction paper, cardboard, markers, crayons, colored pencils, ribbon, etc, to make your card special. You can also design your card using Photoshop. In Photoshop please use 4x6 or 5x7 for your dimensions.

African Proverb #9

"An intelligent enemy is better than a stupid friend."



To me this proverb means that it's better to have some that is above your level or that can challenge you rather than to have someone that is close to you and is no type of competition. If you have someone that is your enemy that most likely means that you two are always having a competition. Being intelligent is something every one will compete for. Even though you two are competing for intelligence and are enemies it's like you're the closest friends. Unlike the the person or persons that are considered to be your closest friends, the only competition that you can really have is like on video games or other fun stuff. After a while competing on those things get boring, then the friend starts feeling like the enemy because all your time is being spent on the enemy.

For example all you and your friend ever do is see who can dress better or get the most boys, but aside from that you have the person who you hate or dislike always trying to See who gets straight A's on their report card or on tests. While you spending more time on the competition between you and your enemy your friend wounds up wining but you don't care. Then your enemy turns out to be your friend and your friend is still your friend but at the same time your enemy.

Semi-Transparent Type Tutorial

Step 1: Type your text.

Step 2: Put a selection around your text. Hide your type layer. Click on the background layer.

Step 3: Press Apple + J. click on your layer Styles and choose drop shadow. Click directly on the words Inner Shadow. Next click on the words Inner Glow. Click OK.

Step 4: Drag your type layer into the trash.

Step 5: Click on your background layer. Hold down the Apple Key + L to Brighten your background image.

The Matrix Shadow Effect Tutorial

Step 1: Press 'D' on your keyboard to set the background swatch with black. Press the letter 'X' to swap swatches. Hold down the Apple key and press delete.

Step 2: Type your text. Hold down the control key and click on the text layer. Choose rasterize.

Step 3: Make a duplicate of your rasterized layer. Go under the filter menu, under blur, choose Motion Blur. When the dialog box appears set the angle to 0º and increase the distance of the Blur to 39 pixels. Click Ok.

Step 4: Make a duplicate of you original rasterized layer. Go under the filter menu, under blur, and choose Motion Blur. When the dialog box appears set the angle to 90º and the blur distance to 80 pixels. Click Ok.

African Proverb #8

"Knowledge is like a garden, if it is not cultivated, it can not be harvested."


This is a very intellectual proverb to me. I say this because I agree with it, like a garden if the seed (of knowledge) is not planted deep in the ground ( not planted in the mind or not a major subject while growing up) then it cannot be gathered. and the reason it cant be gathered is because if it wasn't planted there is nothing there to grow off of or from.

Carved Wood Type Tutorial

Step 1: Click on the gradient tool. In the options toolbar, click on the gradient thumbnail to bring up the gradient editor. when it appears, double click on the left color step. When the color picker appears, click on the custom button, then choose PANTONE 722, and click okay. Double click on the right color stop, this time choose PANTONE 732. Click OK.

Step 2: In the options bar, click on the radial gradient icon. Using this tool, click - and drag from the center to top of the background layer. Go under the Filter Menu, under noise, and choose Add Noise. Enter 12% for Amount, choose Gaussian, check Monochromatic, and click OK.

Step 3: Then, go under the Filter Menu, under Blur, and choose Motion Blur. Enter 33º for angle and 10 for distance. Click OK. Now, go under the Filter Menu, under sharpen, and choose Unsharp Mask. Enter 500% for Amount, 9.0 pixels for radius, and 1 for threshold, then click OK.

Step 4: Type your text Go under the Layer menu, under rasterize, and choose type to convert your type layer into a regular image layer. Now, under Brush Strokes, choose sprayed stroke. Type 12 for stroke length, 7 for radius, and right diagonal for direction. Click OK.

Step 5: Click on the magic wand tool. Click once in your first letter of your word. Then go under the Select Menu and choose similar to select the rest of the letters. Under the Select Menu, choose Inverse. Now, press delete to remove the little chunks of white space around the letters created by the brushed strokes filter.

Step 6: Go under the Select menu and choose Inverse. Drag your text layer into the trash to delete it. Press Apple + J to put the select background area up on it's own layer. In the layers palette, click once on the background layer. Press Apple + A, then press Delete. Press Apple + D to deselect.

Step 7: Click on your text layer 1 choose bevel and emboss from the layer styles menu at the bottom of the layers palette. When the dialog box appears, increase the depth to 400% and decrease the size to 4. Increase the highlight Opacity to 90%. from the left side of the layer styles dialog box, click on the word drop Shadow to bring up it's options. Increase the size to 8, lower the opacity to 50% and click OK.

Step 8: Choose the lasso tool make a thin selection in the center of each letter. Remember to hold down the shift key. Press Apple + C to copy. Add a new layer press Apple + V to paste. Change the layer made from Normal to Color Burn.

Step 9: Duplicate your new layer. Now duplicate your duplicated layer. Change the layer mode from Color Burn to screen. Click on the move tool. Press the right arrow key twice the down arrow key once.

African Proverb #7

"A person who knows proverbs can recognize differences."


What this proverb means to me is if you know proverbs than you can be able to tell what's different in the text that you are reading, because when telling how you feel about a proverb you tell what you feel is suppose to happen a little different appose to just agreeing to what is written.
To me it's good for me to recognize the different opinions me and the writer may have. If we had no differences than it would be pointless to even answer the proverb because I would agree with everything. That is what I believe this proverb meant.

African Proverb #6

"It is better to be loved than feared"

I believe that it is better to be loved than to be feared. I feel this way because if you are loved than you can have people to talk to and tell how you feel and about your day, but if you are feared you can have someone to talk to only because they are scared of you.

That is also a problem because if a person is scared of you and then you tell them your business they go out and tell other people your business and the whole time you thought they were your friend and now they are trying to take advantage of you since they know your weaknesses and strengths. If the person loves you it might be the same way but not as worse because the people they tell might already know what they are telling them.

Test strategies:

Extra Money

You have an extra $100,000 to give away. You can not spend it on yourself. What would you do with the money?


If I had an extra 100,000 and couldn't spend it on myself I think I would have to give it to charity. The charities that I would give it to would be for those who need a cure for cancer. The reason I would give some of it to a charity for cancer because a real close friend to the family has cancer and it would feel like the right thing to do. The next charity would be for those who have HIV/AIDS. I would do that because people with that kind of disease can die depending on how bad they have,like my Aunt Annette.

The rest of the money would be divided with my family (most of it would go to my immediate family). So, my reasons for giving it to my family is because my Mom-Mom & Pop-Pop had given us so much money it would all be paid back. I would then give my dad and his side about $350. The reason I would give them so little money because that's about how much he gives us for child support so he'll get it all back.

"The fool speaks, the wise person listens."

To me this proverb means that one who talks a lot is not able to consume a lot of information, compared to one who listens to all information and learn from it.

Study Strategies- True/False Questions

True or False Test
Every part of a true sentence must be (true).
If any one part of the sentence is false, the whole sentence is false despite many other true statements.

Pay close attention to negatives, qualifiers, absolutes, and long strings of statements.
Negatives can be Confusing
If the question contains negatives, as no, not, (can not) drop the negative and read what remains. Decide whether that sentence is true or false. If it is true, it's opposite, or negative, it's usually false.

Qualifiers are words that Restrict or open up General Statements
Words like (sometimes, often, frequently, ordinarily, generally) open up the possibilities of making accurate statements. They make more modest claims, are more likely to reflect reality, and usually indicate true answers.

Absolute words restrict possibilities, "No, never, none, always, every, entirely, only" imply the statement must be true 100% of the time and usually indicate " False" answer.

Long sentences often include groupss of words sit off by punctuation. Pay attention to the " truth" of each of these phases. If one is false, it usually indicates a "false" answer.

Light Burst Tutorial

Step 1: Set your foreground color to black. Type your text. Rasterize your type layer. Put a selection around your text. Go under the select menu and choose save selection.

Step 2: Deselecct your type. switch your foreground to white. Under the Edit menu choose fill. Change the mode to multiply.Go under the filter menu, under blur,, and choose gaussian blur.

Step 3: Go under the filter menu, under stylize and choose Solarize. Press shift + Apple + L to run the auto levels. Duplicate layer.

Step 4: Filter menu, under distort, choose polar coordinates. Choose polar to rectangular.

Step 5: Go under the image menu, under rotate canvas, choose 90degreess cw. Invert image ( apple + I ). Filter menu, under stylize, choose wind.

Step 6: In wind dialog box choose wind for methode and for the direction choose from the right. Run filter 2 more times by pressing (Apple + F) twice.

Step 7 : Invert your image. Run auto levels. Run the wind filter 3 more times. Rotate canvas 90 counterclockwise. Filter menu, distort, choose polar coordinates.

Step 8 : In polar coordinates, choose rectangular to polar. Change the layer blend mode from normal to screen.


Step 9 : Create a new layer. Choose a gradient. Drag your gradient through this layer. Change to blend mode to color.


Step 10 : Click your text layer copy. Filter menu, under blur, choose radial blur. In the dialog box choose zoom. Increase the amount to 66. Click your original text layer. Select menu, load selection. Choose alpha 1. Change foreground color to black . Deselect your text.

African Proverb #4

" One Camel does not laugh at another camel's hump."

This particular African Proverb to me means do not make fun of somebody because of how they look, dress, or a disability. If someone has Down Syndrome it's not very polite to say they look funny or they sound and walk weird because your children might come out with an even worse disability. Plus everyone has their own flaws.

To me this African Proverb means that the knowledge that has been passed upon you, is knowledge that also can be passed upon to someone else. For example, say if I was in school and just learned an easier way to multiply decimals and percents, I would teach it to my younger brother. With that being said, if I learn something that a teacher taught me I can come home and then teach what I learned.

Gel Type Tutorial

Step 1 : Choose your font, size, and color.

Step 2 : Type your word.

Step 3 : In your layers palette, @ click your type layer to put "marching ants" around the text.

Step 4 : Go under the select menu, under modify, and choose contract. When the contract dialog appears, enter 2 pixels, and click okay, then press option and delete to fill your contracted selection.

Step 5 : Deselect by pressing @ +D . Duplicate this layer by dragging it to the new layers icon. Go under the filter menu, under blur, and choose Gaussian Blur. When the dialog bow appears, enter 3 pixels, and click okay.

Step 6 : Choose bevel and emboss from the layers styles pop-up menu at the bottom of the layers palette.

Step 1: Choose your font , color and size.

Step 2: Type your word(s).

Step 3: Go under the Layers menu, under Type and choose convert to shape.

Step 4: Hold down the Apple key on the keyboard and type the letter 'T' to transform the text.

Step 5: Hold down the control key and click the mouse . Choose perspective. Grab one of the corner boxes and drag to create the perspective effect.

Step 6: Under the layer menu, under rasterize choose shape.

Step 7: Duplicate your text layer. Change your foreground color. Hold down the option key and tap the delete key. Tap the question mark on your keyboard. click option + delete to change the color.

Step 8: Choose the middle layer and move it down to create a drop shadow effect.

" Knowledge is better than riches"

What does that African Proverb mean to you? How can it be used in your everyday life? Give an example.

What the African Proverb " Knowledge is better than riches" means to me is it's more important to have an education than it is to have a lot of money with a expensive house and unintelligent. This can be used in my everyday life by me staying in school and not having to worry about ever being broke because I can get a good paying job. For instance I want to be an Obstetrician which pays a good amount of money, but in order for me to even get that far I have to finish High School and College. Surprisingly a lot of my family who are around my age are going to be working in the same field of work so I'll be close to them.

08-09 School Year

Clearly one of my goals for this year is to be to school on time. Furthermore I would like to be prepared for my classes by having all of my school supplies, homework, and etc. I think in the beginning of last year I was more prepared for class as far as turning in homework and projects than I was towards the end of school. In fact I didn't start coming to school on time until the middle of the school year. It seems that I got to comfortable in the good grades that I received on my previous work that I didn't think not doing some work would effect my grades. As a result of Mothura Marcia telling me if I was late again I would serve Saturday detention I was on time or early every morning.

I believe the benefits of attending New Media is that you learn more challenging work unlike public schools. I think my weakest subjects was RELA and Social Studies. Although my strongest subjects was Science and Math. In fact I think that I did good in Science and Math because they both were interesting and got me thinking all the time. It's evidence to show that I had no care and interest in RELA and Social Studies. I feel that I did okay last year in DMM but I'll do exceptionally better this year.
